During the opening weekend, River Stories and Umeå Jazz Studio collaborate on a three day mini festival welcoming four of our regional starting points.
On three nights during the opening weekend, Umeå Jazz Studio will be a place to warm body and soul with all kinds of improvisational music.
We begin on Thursday 30 January 2014 together with Studio Jazz and the French guitarist Bireli Lagréne.
On Friday 31 January we present the vocal ensemble Framest from Riga, finishing up their tour that began in Storuman. Framest does a capella-arrangements in jazz and pop style and the group is getting close to an international career.
Later on Friday night there will be a performance from BRO (Bothnia Rythm Orchestra), a new constellation of musicians from Osthrobothnia and Västerbotten. BRO is to renew the professional music scene and collaborates with Nathalie Missaoui, aka Cleo and Sabina Ddumba.
The mini festival ends on Saturday 1 February. First to perform is Norrbotten Big Band with Mari Boine and accompanying musicians. For over 25 years, Mari Boine has been composing, written texts and been singing in Sami for an ever growing audience. An ever changing artist mixing her Sami language and heritage with influences from all over the world.
Last but not least are Nicolai Dunger and friends, who have travelled to Umeå the traditional way, by following the reindeers all the way from Ammarnäs. On their journey they have gathered material for new songs and also built upon already existing ones.
The inspiration for River Stories comes from the rivers and their importance for the development of our cultural activities. During 2014 River Stories will create a coherent regional cultural program and a series of projects, shows and events going on tour all over Västerbotten. NorrlandsOperan manages the project with the goal of increasing the regional activities as well as the activities and collaboration with local actors.
