From opera ensemble to a centre for performing
arts
NorrlandsOperan was founded in 1974. Over the years, we have
developed from a regional opera ensemble into a centre for
performing arts with regional commissions and a broad range of
activities. NorrlandsOperan includes a symphony orchestra and
opera, dance, music departments, as well as Vita Kuben - our
contemporary art gallery. NorrlandsOperan also has its own
production workshops and studios and its own ticket office. The
opera house houses a restaurant and bar - NorrlandsOperan
Restaurang & Bar.
Both traditional and provocative
NorrlandsOperan's mission is to produce, promote and develop
theatrical and artistic works. In addition to its own productions,
NorrlandsOperan also hosts touring performances each season. Our
yearly programme includes two festivals - the eclectic art festival
MADE, held in the spring, and the Umeå Jazz Festival, held in the
autumn. Our vision is to provide a venue for new artistic
expression and we strive for our work to be characterised by both
the traditional and the provocative.
Our regional mission
A number of our own productions tour the local region each year and
NorrlandsOperan also collaborates with regional events organisers.
These partnerships have created the opportunity for performances to
be held at locations throughout northern Sweden. NorrlandsOperan
conducts various county-based projects for children and youth, such
as dance and music camps and the music competition Musik
Direkt.
International collaboration
NorrlandsOperan has collaborated with South Africa's Cape Town
Opera since 2004, a partnership that has resulted in the
performance of operas like Rusalka, Porgy & Bess, the new work
Poet & Prophetess and most recently, Peter Grimes. We also have
an ongoing partnership in dance and opera with the Vietnam National
Opera and Ballet Theatre in Hanoi, which recently resulted in the
blog-musical Dream and Reality that premiered in Hanoi on 24 May.
Dream and Reality premiered in Umeå on 26 September 2009. This
collaborative project will continue during the autumn.
